About Us
Feminist Communities for Climate Justice is a campaign for climate justice that reflects feminist and community work values. The project is a partnership between the National Women’s Council of Ireland and Community Work Ireland that seeks to amplify the voices of women and marginalised communities that are most impacted by climate breakdown. We work to build momentum in communities to engage, understand and influence climate policies and to create an inclusive space for learning about climate change.
We work with community groups, like-minded organisations, activists and community workers to demonstrate that new ways of doing things are possible, creating alternatives that are just, inclusive and rooted in care. We campaign for change and challenge the status quo, building movements and changing mindsets through coalitions and partnerships with aligned organisations and networks.
Defining Climate Justice
The ecological and climate crisis is the biggest threat to humanity and our planet. However, its impact is uneven and unequal. The effects of climate change hit hardest those with fewer resources and less power, especially in the global south. Women from marginalised communities are often the most vulnerable. These impacts can worsen gender inequalities and threaten recent progress for women and minorities.
In the Feminist Communities for Climate Justice project, we believe we cannot tackle climate change without addressing systemic political, social, and economic inequalities. We aim to ensure climate policies educate, mobilise, and empower women and marginalised communities in Ireland. This way, everyone can participate in and benefit from climate action.
A feminist climate justice vision imagines a world where everyone enjoys full human rights, free from discrimination. It aims for a healthy, sustainable economy. Ending inequalities based on gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation is key to this mission. This transformation, inspired by feminist thinking, should follow an ethics of care which foregrounds the (often unpaid and unrecognised) labour of women. It emphasises interdependence in human interaction and makes intersectionality a core principle.
Our Advocacy
We aim to influence policy at a national level, and to amplify the voices of women and marginalised communities in decision-making. We regularly make submissions to public consultations on areas of national climate and environmental policy that affect women and marginalised communities, and that have the potential to improve community wellbeing.
